BRADSHAW - On January 26, at approximately 6:29 p.m., deputies with the York County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a report of a male subject running down the middle of Highway 34 near Road H, just outside of Bradshaw, Nebraska.

While deputies were enroute, York County 911 received an additional call reporting that the male was actively assaulting a Good Samaritan who had stopped to render assistance. Upon arrival, deputies were advised by a witness that the male was armed with a weapon and was located in the bed of a pickup truck belonging to another motorist who had also stopped to help.

Due to the immediate safety concerns, a York County Sheriff’s Office sergeant deployed a pepperball device, which temporarily incapacitated the male. Deputies then safely took the individual into custody. A Sawzall blade was located in the bed of the pickup truck during the investigation.

Further investigation revealed the male was experiencing a mental health crisis, which was determined to be the primary factor contributing to the incident. The individual was transported to York General Hospital, where he was medically cleared, and was then transferred to Mary Lanning Hospital for further mental health-related treatment.

The Good Samaritan involved sustained minor injuries and declined medical treatment at the scene.
The name of the male involvement in this incident will not be released due to this being a mental health related incident and the male is not being charged criminally.

This incident highlights the unpredictable and dangerous situations law enforcement officers may encounter while responding to calls for service. The York County Sheriff’s Office appreciates the concern shown by members of the public and reminds citizens to report suspicious or concerning behavior to our office so it can be addressed safely and appropriately.
