UNL Fulbright Scholar Program to Visit Grand Island


Grand Island, Neb. — One of the most culturally diverse cities in Nebraska is about to inject even more multicultural heritage and history into a one-day visit from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Fulbright Scholar Program.

On Wednesday, March 26, at least nine Fulbright Scholars (number likely to increase) will be touring the city before presenting their respective countries to the public in a Fulbright Scholar Multicultural Showcase event at the Grand Island Public Library. The nine Fulbright Scholars already committed include:


  1.  Parviz Jamalov (Tajikistan)
  2.  Syed Owais Athar (Pakistan)
  3.  Michael Ivashchenko (Ukraine)
  4.  Dania Javaid (Kashmir)
  5.  Fabrice Gbenonsi (Benin)
  6.  Andrea Alvarado (Mexico)
  7.  Noe Hernandez (Nicaragua)
  8.  Sebastian Marin-Hine (Columbia)
  9.  Inora Mazoio (Mozambique)

Their morning will start off with a meeting with Mayor Roger Steele at Grand Island City Hall at 9 a.m. The Fulbright contingency will then visit the Stuhr Museum and tour both the Grand Island Police Department and Grand Island Fire Department. Following those tours they will head to the Grand Island Public Library where they will take part in the showcase event.

The Fulbright Scholar Multicultural Showcase will run from 3:30 p.m – 5:30 p.m. at the library and will first feature individual presentations from 3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. The Scholars will then take part in a panel session as they share information about their home countries before opening it up for a public Q&A session.
