Nebraska outside hitter Lexi Sun was among the 30 NCAA women's volleyball student-athletes announced as candidates for the 2021 Senior CLASS Award on Thursday.

The Senior CLASS award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as a senior or graduate student and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.

A native of Encinitas, Calif., Sun is a two-time AVCA All-American, a two-time AVCA All-North Region pick and a two-time All-Big Ten selection. Earlier this season, she surpassed 1,000 kills as a Husker, becoming the 23rd player in program history and the ninth in the rally-scoring era to reach the milestone.

Sun was named a second-team Academic All-American in 2021 and is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree. She has earned a spot on the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll each of the last six semesters and was a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar (2020). Sun carried a 3.51 undergraduate GPA and earned her bachelor's degree in communication studies in December 2020. She is pursuing a master's degree in advertising and public relations in her fifth year of eligibility.

In the community, Sun has been a classroom speaker at Pershing Elementary for School is Cool Week and visited Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital. She and her teammates have served meals at Matt Talbot Kitchen & Outreach. Additionally, she has attended the Husker Diversity and Inclusion Summit for three consecutive years.

The 30 Senior CLASS Award candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists later this year, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.

The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2021 Division I Women's Volleyball Championship in December.
