Spencer Schubert to Become First-Ever Grand Island Communications Manager

City Of Grand Island

On February 1, 2024, the City of Grand Island will be adding a new member to its Administration team following a national search for candidates. Mayor Roger Steele said “Our national search discovered our first-ever Communications Manager was a Nebraska native who was already doing important work and living right here in the Tri-Cities area. I’m happy to announce long-time local news anchor Spencer Schubert will be joining our team as Communications Manager.”

During the development of the 2024 City Budget, the Mayor and City Administrator Laura McAloon recommended the creation of this position. The City Council supported and approved the position in recognition of the City’s number one priority, which is the delivery of excellent City services to the residents of the City. Schubert will advise and assist all City departments on the delivery of up to date information about City services, programs and events to both City residents and visitors.

“We need to reach every member of our community when we are talking about the development of our City – whether we are working on a master plan for our parks and trail systems or advertising the development of a new housing or retail project in your neighborhood," City Administrator McAloon noted. "We also put on great programming for families and youth at our facilities, such as the Edith Abbott Library and the Grand Island Community Fieldhouse, and we know we can do an even better job of communicating the availability of our programs to all of our residents."

Schubert is a Kearney, Neb. native and comes to the City after a more than 17 year career in broadcasting and journalism. During that time, he worked for both Local4 News as well as NTV News locally, providing him a well-rounded view of not only the City of Grand Island, but the Tri-City area as a whole. Provided his wealth of knowledge and his firm understanding of Grand Island, the City expects to provide information and communication to residents at a whole new level.

"All City activities and actions directly impact our citizens’ quality of life and economic opportunities, and we are excited to launch this new approach to City communications and outreach,” Steele said.
