South Locust Street Project Enters 2026 Construction Season; Road Closures Begin March 2
Grand Island, Neb. — The City of Grand Island Public Works Department will be closing Bismark Road from South Locust Street to Pine Street on Monday, March 2. The Bismark Road east-west detour route will be maintained on South Locust Street, Oklahoma Avenue and Pine Street.
South Locust Street from Charles Street to Koenig Street will also be closed starting Monday, March 2 for water main reconstruction. The work zones mentioned above are anticipated to be complete and open to traffic by April 15. The South Locust Street and Anna Street/Bismark Road roundabout phases will follow.
The South Locust Street project includes new construction from Fonner Park Road to Koenig Street, which will replace the existing asphalt street with a concrete curb and gutter roadway section along with sidewalks/bike trail, storm sewer, water main, sanitary sewer repairs, roadway lighting and associated pavement markings and signage. A roundabout will be constructed at the South Locust Street and Anna Street/Bismark Road intersection.
The South Locust Street project is entering its second construction season in 2026. During the first season of construction in 2025, South Locust Street reconstruction from Fonner Park Drive to Delaware Avenue was completed. South Locust Street reconstruction from Delaware Avenue to Koenig Street is now set for 2026.
On February 11, 2025, the Grand Island City Council awarded the South Locust Street construction contract to Elsbury Construction, LLC of Grand Island, Nebraska for $9,044,222.01.
