Senator Ricketts’ Weekly Column: Reflecting the Joy and Peace of Christmas

Pete Ricketts Weekly Column

The Christmas season is about joy, peace, and spending time with family. We decorate our homes with festive lights. We embrace the traditions that make this time of year so special. We share meals with loved ones. We celebrate our blessings. Christmas is also an opportunity to reflect on the true meaning of the season and unite around our shared values.

For my family, Christmas is about celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. His humble arrival in a manger brought hope and healing to our broken world. Jesus taught that "it is more blessed to give than to receive." He taught that true greatness is found in serving others. Christmas is not simply about the gifts we receive. It’s about the gifts we graciously give through acts of kindness and service. Jesus’ message of love and service should motivate us.

Many brave women and men spend the holidays away from their families. We owe so much to these first responders, medical professionals, and law enforcement officers. They work tirelessly to keep us safe. They deserve our gratitude.

We also think of the servicemembers who are far from home. These heroes defend our freedoms. They protect our way of life. Their sacrifices, and the sacrifices of their families, are never forgotten. Let’s thank them for their service and pray for their safe return.

As we gather around the Christmas tree, let’s also remember those who are struggling. Some people grieve the loss of a loved one. Others face financial hardship and wonder how to make ends meet. Too many people experience severe loneliness during the holidays. Christmas is a time to reach out to those in need. A phone call, an encouraging word, or a meal – all can make a big difference.

In the spirit of Christmas, let’s take a moment to help our neighbors and offer our support to those around us. By doing so, we strengthen the bonds that unite us as a community and as a state.

We also recognize the challenges many face around the world. We continue to pray for a just end to conflicts in places torn by violence. We grieve with those who have lost loved ones. And we recommit ourselves to supporting our troops who protect our freedoms.

As we look to 2026, I’m inspired by how special Nebraska is. There is still much more that unites us than divides us. As Nebraskans, we embrace family and faith. We work hard. We are compassionate, always ready to lend a helping hand. We work together to make our state a better place for everyone. It’s why Nebraska is what America is supposed to be.

On behalf of my family, my team, and myself, may you experience the true joy of the holiday season. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, Nebraska!
