Northwest Girls Get Road Win At York, 37-27

(York, NE)- The Northwest girls basketball team picked up a road win on Wednesday night, defeating the York Dukes for the second time this season, 37-27.

It was the third meeting of the season between the two Central Conference rivals. Northwest won at York on January 10th, 39-36. The Vikings would fall to the Dukes at York in the Central Conference semi-finals, 53-48, on January 30th.

The Wednesday night affair was with the season on the line, playing in the Class B District 4 semi-finals. It was an ugly, low-scoring first half. Northwest would have a 16-9 lead at halftime. Both teams would have several looks at the basket, but offense would be hard to come by.

York would take an early lead, 3-0. Allie Nelson would hit a three-pointer to tie the game. Then Emerson McIntyer would knock down a three to give the Vikings the lead for good with 3:42 left in the first quarter. The Northwest lead would grow to five with a Jolie O'Hara three-pointer, making it 12-7 with 3:37 to play before halftime.

In the third quarter, Northwest would extend its lead to 20-9 with 3:30 remaining. The Vikings would take a 25-13 lead into the fourth quarter. York would then go on a 12-0 run to start the fourth quarter. Northwest would find itself on a five-and-a-half-minute scoring drought from the end of the third quarter into the fourth quarter. York would cut the Northwest lead to two, 27-25, with 4:05 remaining. That was as close as the Dukes would get.

Jolie O'Hara would knock down a three-pointer to give the Vikings a five-point lead, 30-25, with 3:47 left. Viking free throws down the stretch would seal the win, moving Northwest on to the B4 district final on Saturday at 1:00 pm at Gretna East. Listen to the game live on 103.1 FM & 2dayfm1031.com. Gretna East defeated Elkhorn Wednesday night, 40-29.
