New Lifeguard Development and Recruiting Program

The Grand Island Parks and Recreation Department is announcing new efforts to help recruit, develop, and train young lifeguards.

Youth ages 11-14 years old can now participate in a new Junior Lifeguard program that will provide participants with firsthand experience, training, and insight on what it takes to be a lifeguard. In addition to the class the City has lowered the minimum age for hiring lifeguards
from 16 to 15 years old.

Junior Lifeguard Program Highlights
• June 7-9, 9:00 am – Noon
• T-shirts Provided
• Ages 11 – 14 years old
• $35 per participant
• Instruction provided by certified American Red Cross lifeguards
• Introductory to basic lifeguarding training. Participants receive hands on
experience with lifeguard job duties and learn many lifesaving techniques.
• Participants who completed the program will begin work at the higher rate of
$13.25 per hour when they turn 15 years old.

The Grand Island pools are currently slated to open Memorial Day weekend. City lifeguards have the opportunity to work at both Island Oasis and Lincoln Pool. The Parks and Recreation Department provides certified lifeguard training for all new guards.
