Montag’s paintings on display at Good Samaritan

KEARNEY— CHI Health Good Samaritan welcomes artist Jeff Montag to its Walkway Gallery. The new exhibit features colorful paintings of subjects that Montag finds inspirational. It will be on display at the hospital through November 2025.

Montag began his artistic journey as a healing outlet following a life-changing gymnastics injury. He lived in Kearney with his family for more than 30 years and worked in healthcare helping individuals re-enter the workforce after job loss. Montag currently lives in Bennington, NE.

“Through my art, I capture scenes, people, and moments that I hope offer encouragement to others walking through their own valleys. I found hope in the world around me, and now I aim to reflect that same hope through my work—moments that transcend limitations and speak to the resilience of the human spirit,” says Montag.

The gallery at Good Samaritan has provided a respite to those walking the hospital’s halls since 2008.

Artist Biography written by Jeff Montag:

I create art with a purpose: to bring joy, hope, and light to those navigating difficult times. My heart is especially drawn to those who are discouraged or in distress, and it’s this connection that fuels my artistic journey.

My path as an artist began unexpectedly at the age of 17, following a life-changing gymnastics accident. During a competition, I fell from the still rings, breaking my neck. The injury left me paralyzed (Quadriplegia) from the fourth rib down and affected the use of my hands. While the injury itself was a challenge, the greater struggle came during recovery—learning to adapt and find purpose with what remained.

It was during rehabilitation that a recreation therapist taped a paintbrush to my hand during a craft session. That moment sparked something profound in me. Painting became more than a pastime; it became a vital outlet, a way to rediscover a sense of productivity, creativity, and self-worth.

Through my art, I capture scenes, people, and moments that I hope offer encouragement to others walking through their own valleys. I found hope in the world around me, and now I aim to reflect that same hope through my work—moments that transcend limitations and speak to the resilience of the human spirit.

Originally from Moline, Illinois, I’ve lived in Kearney, Nebraska for over 30 years with my wife and family. My professional background includes a long career in healthcare, and more recently, I’ve served as a Career Management Coach, helping individuals re-enter the workforce after job loss.

I hold a minor in art from the University of Illinois and have continued to explore and refine my technique ever since. Painting remains a joyful and healing part of my life—both a personal expression and a way to give back.
