Legion Baseball: Columbus Defeats Grand Island Wednesday Night

(Grand Island, NE) - The second comeback for Grand Island Home Federal on Wednesday night at Ryder Park fell just short falling to Columbus Cornerstone Insurance by a final score of 12-11 in 12 innings. It's the second time in little over a week that GI has played an extra-inning game. Last Tuesday Home Federal fell at Kearney in 14 innings 3-2. In the game vs Columbus, GI trailed early 5-1 after three and a half innings. GI would start the rally scoring one run in the bottom of the fourth. One more run in the bottom in the fifth which then made it 5-3 Columbus after five innings. A scoreless sixth would then take the game to the final inning of regulation with Columbus scoring one run to make it a 6-3 game.

GI came to the plate in the 7th needing three runs to tie the game. With one out in the bottom of the 7th Grand Island would get to work offensively with Grayson Sack delivering a single followed by a Broxton Barrientos single to right field. Columbus would then walk Gabe Ruiz to load up the bases for Home Federal. Ian Arends would walk bringing in a run, GI found themselves down 6-4. Ryan Coslor would fly out to right field. Coming into score was Barrientos to make it a 6-5 game. Trent Verplank was then hit by a pitch to load up the bases again for Grand Island. Gage Gannon would then draw a walk to bring in the tieing run to knot the game at 6-6. In extra innings, the scoring picked up in the 12th. Columbus scored five runs with Grand Island trying to match the output in the bottom half of the frame but would fall short only scoring four runs. Combined pitching in the game saw 32 total strikeouts. Columbus batters struck out 17 times, Grand Island 15. GI would finish with 10 runs on 11 hits and have 5 errors in the game. Columbus had 11 runs on 15 hits and 3 errors in the contest. 

In the juniors game, Columbus defeated Grand Island Five Points Bank by a final score of 6-5. 

Grand Island Home Federal is now 20-6 on the season and will next be in action Thursday, June 27th through Sunday, June 30th at the Mike Peterson Tournament in Lincoln. GI will be next at home on July 2nd hosting Lexington at 7:30 pm. The next action on KRGI 1430/105.5 will be on Wednesday, July 3rd as GI will host Lincoln Pius X for a doubleheader at Ryder Park. Game one is at Noon with game two to follow at 2:30 pm. Game two will air on KRGI.
