Hastings Scores Late Game TD To Defeat Northwest 28-21
(Hastings, NE) - A 39-yard touchdown pass from Tucker Synek to Chance Vertin with 51 seconds left in the game on Friday night would be the difference as the Hastings Tigers would defeat the Northwest Vikings by a final score of 28-21. Northwest would take an early 7-0 lead with 8:28 remaining in the 1st quarter on a Gavin Haubold 9-yard touchdown run. A Hastings interception would set up a 2-yard TD run by Tucker Synek with 7 seconds left in the first quarter to tie the game up at 7-7. The touchdown by the Tigers was converted on a fourth and goal play. Kooper Khol would run in an 8-yard touchdown run with 7:59 remaining in the second quarter as the Tigers would take a 14-7 lead, which would be the halftime score.
In the second half it would be a back-and-forth affair. The Vikings would score on a Caejon Suttles 2-yard touchdown run to make a 14-14 game. The Tigers would answer right back on the next possession scoring a 3 yard touchdown run by Kooper Khol that capped a 49-yard drive making it 21-14 Tigers. The Vikings would then march down the field with 2:57 remaining in the game needing a TD and PAT to tie the game and would get just that. Suttles would hit Cam Walker on the Northwest sideline with a pass that in turn went for a 46 yard td play where Walker would break numerous tackels to then break free and streak into the endzone for six points. The Tigers would then answer with the last touchdown play to Chance Veritin. Northwest would then take the ball down in the closing seconds to the Tiger 16-yard line. Hastings would intercept a last-gasp pass to the endzone as time expired and the Tigers would hang on for the seven-point win.
Hastings is now 1-1 on the season and will head to Bennington to take on the Badgers next week. Northwest is now 0-2 on the season and will host Lexington next Friday, September 13th. Listen live on 103.1 FM & 2dayfm1031.com.
