Hastings Bronco Football Knocks off Jimmies
Hastings, NE – The Hastings College football team was put to the test once again but came out on top 17-10 over the Jamestown Jimmies on Saturday afternoon on Lloyd Wilson Field.
Hastings took the lead after taking over late in the third quarter following a short punt to the Jimmie 40. The Broncos marched down to the 16 when Eli Nappe connected with Will Austin for the touchdown and the Broncos led 17-10 with 14:14 to go in the fourth.
Jamestown then methodically moved the ball down the field deep into Bronco territory but the defense was up to the challenge when Arjee Mack-Myers broke free on the blindside hitting quarterback Ty Monson forcing the ball loose as Fareed Soluade jumped on the loose ball giving the ball back to the Broncos with 8:04 to go.
Nappe and the Broncos quickly moved the ball down the field as Nappe connected with Ethan Wilborn for receptions of 12 and five yards respectively. Then Nappe hit Brett Simonsen for 16 more yards that setup a long pass down the side line from Nappe to Tanner-James Friend but he couldn’t haul it in as Hastings was forced to punt. With 5:05 to go.
Jamestown again moved the ball right down the field and was inside the HC 20 but Monson was being pressured by Ethan Shaw as he threw the ball away but because he was still in the box and the ball didn’t cross the line of scrimmage, Monson was penalized for intentional grounding making it 2nd and 24 from the 34. Following back-to-back incomplete passes, Monson dropped back and as he looked downfield, Caden Egr came clean up the middle crushing the quarterback for the sack effectively ending the game.
The Jimmies started the scoring off in the first quarter when Monson hit Carlos Julian for a 19-yard touchdown to take the 7-0 lead with 3:31 to go.
On the Broncos ensuing possession, Hastings marched down the field going 82 yards in nine plays with Nappe hitting Friend from nine yards out to tie the game 7-7.
Then after Marcus Dustin intercepted Monson at the one yard line, the Bronco offense moved the ball 92 yards in 17 plays and settled for a 24-yard Casper Feijen field goal to take the lead. Jamestown came right back with an Austin Peterson 29-yard field goal as the teams headed to the break tied 10-10.
After getting stuffed at the goal line midway through the third quarter, Hastings would pick up that short field and scored that early touchdown in the fourth to take the lead for good.
Hastings finished the game with 222 yards of offense while the Jimmies finished with 250 yards. Nappe finished the game going 22-for-31 for 165 yards and two touchdowns. Monson went 20-for-33 for 202 yards, and touchdown and a pick.
Simonsen finished the game with 64 yards rushing on 17 carries.
Mack-Myers led the defense with 10 total tackles with a sack and 1.5 tackles for loss. Jayden Roberts added nine tackles while Dustin finished with eight total tackles and a pick.
Hastings is now 3-1 (2-1) on the year and will be back in action Saturday Sept. 23 hitting the road to take on Briar Cliff with kickoff set for 6:00 pm out in Sioux City, IA.
