Grand Island Kite Festival Adds Night Flight
GRAND ISLAND, NEBRASKA: The Grand Island Kite Festival will sail again this summer with nine professional kiters — also known as “big kite flyers” — in attendance from as far away as Colorado. It’s the first year that the event will be free to the public, whether you want to watch the pros or fly your own kites as a family.
The first kites to take flight will be after dark on June 28th. The event’s first night flight will get underway north of Starr Elementary School (1800 Adams St) featuring LED illuminated kites. If you don’t own your own lighted kite, feel free to “oooh” and “ahhh” at the flyers who do.
Daytime flights will follow at the Veterans Sports Complex soccer fields on June 29th (10am-4pm) and 30th (11am-3pm). As already mentioned, there is no admission charge this year. Food vendors and kite sales will be available at the event. Bring your own kites to fly, or a comfortable lawn chair if you're coming to watch the pros, including members of the Midwest Kiteflyers Club out of Omaha, send their huge kites up into the air.
