Grand Island, Neb. — The Grand Island Public Library will host a free all-ages program, “Connecting to Folk Music,” presented by musician David Seay at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 13.

Often described as the “music of the people,” folk music has long connected communities through storytelling, shared experiences and simple instruments. During this interactive 90-minute workshop, participants will have the opportunity to explore traditional folk instruments such as the harmonica, mountain dulcimer, ukulele and spoons. Attendees will also collaborate in creating an original folk song together.

Harmonicas will be provided for participants to play during the workshop and take home while supplies last. Participants are also welcome to bring their own C-tuned ukuleles or 10-hole diatonic harmonicas in the key of C.

Seay is known for his engaging and approachable teaching style, helping participants of all ages discover the joy of making music. The program is free and open to the public and is made possible through support from Humanities Nebraska.

“Connecting to Folk Music” is part of the Humanities Nebraska Speakers Bureau, which offers approximately 300 programs each year featuring more than 165 speakers. The bureau includes scholars, writers, musicians, storytellers and folklorists who present on a wide range of topics including history, culture, literature, ethics and multicultural issues.

Speakers from the Humanities Nebraska Speakers Bureau are available to nonprofit organizations across the state. Most presentations last 30 to 60 minutes and include a question-and-answer session.
