GI Home Federal Clobbers Kearney In Cornhusker League Championship

(Kearney, NE) - The Grand Island Home Federal baseball team scored two runs in the first inning on Wednesday night and never looked back, claiming the Cornhusker League championship game defeating Kearney Misko Sports, 10-2, in five innings. 

It was the second year in a row for Grand Island to claim the title among the five Class A American Legion teams. (North Platte, Columbus, Kearney, Grand Island, and Hastings) 

Home Federal would score two runs in the first, add four more in the top of the third inning, and then blow the game open in the fifth with a 3-RBI triple from Ian Arends. Kearney would get their lone runs of the game with a Griffin Novacek home run in the bottom of the fifth inning. GI Home Federal would have five doubles in the game. 

On the hill for GI, Carson Rust moved to 6-0 on the season. In five innings of work, Rust had 79 pitches, gave up seven hits, two runs, both earned, three walks, and had one strikeout. 

Grand Island is now 19-13 on the season. Kearney slips to 19-12. Grand Island will be back in action on Friday, July 11th, vs Millard South from Duncan Field in Hastings. First pitch is set for 3:30 pm. Listen live on KRGI 1430/105.5 & krgi.com. 

Grand Island is now 2-1 against Kearney for the summer season, with the two teams likely to meet again in the A7 area district tournament starting next Friday, July 18th, in North Platte. Grand Island already has a spot in the state tournament as GI will be one of the two host sites starting on July 26th.
