Emporia Rallies Past UNK Women, 82-78
Four scored in double figures to help Emporia State down Nebraska Kearney, 82-78, Saturday evening in Kansas.
The Hornets (8-7, 2-4) and Lopers (9-8, 2-4) meet again on Valentine's Day in Kearney.
With leading scorer Myleigh Weers (Diller) unavailable, the Lopers led at the half as senior point guard Jillian Aschoff (Lincoln Pius X) had 18 points. However, the Hornets hung around and moved ahead on a layup by freshman Vanessa Coleman with 2:00 remaining. UNK led by nine points early in the fourth quarter, 67-58, but Coleman's bucket made it 76-75. Down the stretch, E-State didn't miss a shot from the field or at the line to record the win.
Coleman (15) and senior forward Macey Gandee (14) had big efforts as did reserves graduate Kaitlyn Sanders (19 points, six rebounds and five assists) and sophomore Micah Hannah (10 points, four rebounds).
For the Lopers, Aschoff got close to another triple double (24/9/8) with Kansas junior forward Jordan Sears providing 19 points and five boards. UNK was out rebounded by four and saw its field goal percentage fall below 40% in the second half.
UNK heads to Northwest Missouri and Missouri Western next weekend.
