Curtis Hensley is one month into his role as Assistant Fire Chief of Fire Operations and enjoying serving Hastings Fire & Rescue and the City of Hastings. Hensley joined Hastings Fire & Rescue on June 16.

Overseeing fire operations, Hensley coordinates fire trainings and supervises captains. He said stepping into any new role comes with its own challenges, expectations, and learning curves — especially when joining a new department – and that keeps the job exciting and rewarding.

He emphasized the importance of authenticity and relationship-building in his leadership style. “My approach has always been to be genuinely myself, take the time to get to know each crew member, understand what motivates them, and learn what brings them to work each day,” he said. “In return, I offer them trust, respect, and the tools and knowledge they deserve and need to succeed in both their personal and professional lives.”

He added building strong, personal, and professional relationships is a priority in his role— especially as he works alongside crews in his capacity as the department’s training officer.

“My goal is to lead by example as a ‘working chief,’ and being responsible for all aspects of training at HFR gives me the perfect opportunity to do just that,” he said. “I believe that by putting in the time and effort to truly connect, we’ll bridge any gaps and build something meaningful together here at Hastings Fire & Rescue.”

Now serving in his new leadership role, Hensley looks forward to continuing his lifelong commitment to the fire service.

“I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to share my passion for leadership, training, and public service on a broader scale,” he said. “Helping shape the next generation of firefighters, EMTs, and paramedics here at HFR is an honor, and I look forward to contributing to the department’s mission, vision, and core values of duty, respect, and integrity.”

Hensley brings more than 22 years of experience in the fire service, shaped by a lifelong passion that began in his hometown of Julesburg, Colorado at age 4. He received associates of applied science degrees in fire science technology and paramedicine from McCook Community College. He also earned a bachelor of applied science degree in Business Management from Peru State College.

“Curtis has a solid educational background in administration and management and is a very passionate, eager, and motivated student of the fire service,” Chief Troy Vorderstrasse said.
“This passion and commitment to, not only strive to improve himself but also those around him, made him a right choice for our Assistant Chief position. Curtis was also highly recommended by  those I spoke with who worked with him and from those he worked for. Curtis is committed to HFR’s goal to offer exceptional public service to the City of Hastings and surrounding area. We are happy to welcome him into our team.”

Prior to joining the City of Hastings, Curtis worked as a Lieutenant Fire/Medic for the City of North Platte Fire Department. His family includes his wife Emily and four children.
