Crusader girls down Northwest

(Grand Island, NE) - A crosstown showdown between Central Catholic and Northwest girls basketball teams ended in a roller coaster finish at Central Catholic's Crusader Gym with GICC winning 49-41. GICC jumped on top in the first half 34-19 with some hot three-point shooting led by Avery O'Boyle with three three-pointers and Anna Tibbets chipping in two more, and Carolyn Maser would have six points.
The second half was a much different story. At the 5:30 mark of the third quarter, a mad dash for a loose ball would end up in an injury timeout with Avyn Urbanski for Northwest and Lucy Ghaifan for GICC down on the court. Urbanski after some time away would come back for the Vikings to play the rest of the 2nd half. Ghaifan was able to walk off the court with some assistance and later would come back in the gym and sit down to watch the rest of the game. The Vikings would then go on a 10-0 run to climb back into the game and cut the Crusader lead down to 36-32. That would be as close as the Vikings would get after outscoring GICC 13-4 in the 3rd quarter. The Crusaders would hang on in the fourth quarter scoring 11 points to the Vikings' 9.
Northwest with the loss is now 5-10 on the season, while the Crusaders move on to 9-5. GICC is back in action today, Saturday, January 21st at Adams Central. Girls' game at 1:30 pm with the boy's game to follow at 3:30 pm. Listen live on 97.3 FM & thewolf973fm.com
