Creighton Women Win At Home 79-66 Over Providence
Omaha, Neb -- Trailing by as much as five in the fourth quarter, Creighton Women's Basketball closed the game on an 18-2 run to snatch a 79-66 win over Providence on Sunday, February 2, during the BIG EAST Female Forward National Girls and Women in Sports Day celebration.
This late-game surge pushed Creighton to 18-4 overall and 10-1 in the BIG EAST, with Providence falling to 9-16 and 2-10 in conference play.
Both teams offenses began the game cooking as the two squads battled through five ties and four lead changes. Providence pushed out to a 15-10 advantage with 4:10 remaining, but senior Jayme Horan responded with five straight points to knot the game with 3:39 remaining. The back-and-forth battle continued as the game moved to the second quarter tied at 22-22.
After Providence took a 24-22 lead, Creighton found its range from beyond the arc as the Bluejays hit five treys in the frame to take a 39-33 lead into the locker room. Molly Mogensen and Lauren Jensen each dialed up a pair of three-pointers, while Morgan Maly hit a record breaking three-ball. It was her 310th career trey, moving her into sole possession of first place in Creighton's record book as she slid past Kathy Halligan (1988-92).
The Friars responded in a big way in the third, opening the frame with a 16-4 run that also saw Jensen and Maly go to the bench with four fouls. Down 51-45 with just over two minutes left in the third, Creighton turned to Jayme Horan, Mogensen and junior Kennedy Townsend. The trio led the Bluejays on a 8-3 surge to send the game to the fourth with Creighton down 54-53.
Providence head the Bluejays at bay for the first five minutes of the fourth, leading 64-61 with 5:38 left, but Creighton refused to go down on its home floor. Six different Bluejays scored in the final five minutes, led by five from Horan. Providence lone bucket over the final 5:38 came with 59 seconds on the clock.
Molly Mogensen led the team with 17 points, eight rebounds, and five assists. While Jensen and Jayme Horan followed with 16 points and Morgan Maly delivered 13 points. Olivia Olsen carried the Friars with 22 points and 10 rebounds, while Brynn Farrell delivered 11 points.
The Bluejays will be back at home on Wednesday, February 5 as the Bluejays host Seton Hall with a 6:00 p.m. start.
