Creighton Men Run Away From Seton Hall

OMAHA, Neb. -- Five Bluejays finished in double figures as No. 12 Creighton led wire-to-wire in an 85-64 win over Seton Hall on Wednesday, February 28.

The victory pushed the Bluejays to 21-8 on the season and 12-6 in BIG EAST action, while Seton Hall dropped to 18-10 overall and 11-6 in conference action. Creighton also moved past the Pirates into third place in the BIG EAST standings, as well as picking up a season sweep over The Hall.

Leading 14-11 with just under 10 minutes remaining in the first half, reserve Isaac Traudt gave Creighton a lift with back-to-back treys to ignite an 11-0 run and push the Jays advantage out to 25-11 . After the Pirates closed within single digits (25-16) with 5:44 left in the opening half, the Bluejays plundered the Pirates with a 13-2 surge. Creighton's scoring wave got started with another pair of three-pointers, this time coming from Baylor Scheierman to hold a 38-18 edge. At the half the Bluejays held a 38-22 lead.

Early in the second half Creighton put the game away with a final scoring run, extending their advantage to 55-28 with 10 straight points. This time the run was bookended by treys from Steven Ashworth and Scheierman.

Ryan Kalkbrenner led all scorers with 23 points while shooting 10-for-10 from the field and passing Vernon Moore and Paul Silas to move into ninth place on Creighton's scoring list. Scheierman delivered 20 points and 11 rebounds, moving over 1,000 points at Creighton to become the 11th man in Division I history to score 1,000 points at multiple schools. Trey Alexander finished with 15 points and a career-high 10 assists for the double-double, while Traudt and Ashworth rounded out Creighton's quintet in double-figures with 11 and 10 points respectively. Creighton shot 54.4 percent from the field, made 13-of-32 three-pointers, and won the rebound battle 35-28.

Seton Hall got a game-high 18 points from Dre Davis, while Kadary Richmond and Al-Amir Dawes notched 15 and 13 points in the loss. The Pirates shot 41.7 percent from the field and were 2-of-9 from downtown.

The Bluejays remain home for Senior Day against No. 5 Marquette on Saturday, March 2 at 1:30 p.m. The game will be featured on FOX.

NOTES: Baylor Scheierman now owns 1,078 career defensive rebounds, the most by any player in the country since 1999-2000 ... Baylor Scheierman set the single-season CHI Health Center Omaha record for defensive rebounds with 113, passing a mark he set himself of 110 last season ... Baylor Scheierman's 13 double-doubles this season are tied for the most by any Bluejay since 1987-88, as he did it last year and Bob Harstad did it in 1988-89 ... Trey Alexander became the sixth player in Creighton history to surpass 500 points as both a sophomore and junior, joining Doug McDermott, Bob Harstad, Ty-Shon Alexander, Paul Silas and Rodney Buford ... Ryan Kalkbrenner has scored in double-figures in 16 straight games, the third-longest active streak in the BIG EAST and just ahead of teammates Baylor Scheierman (14) and Trey Alexander (11) ... Kalkbrenner's 52 straight games with eight points or more is tied for the nation's fourth-longest active streak ... In the last 10 meetings in Omaha against Seton Hall, Creighton is 6-0 in games decided by more than 10 points ... Creighton has played 95 straight games on television ...  Creighton has now won 12 or more league wins each of the last five seasons. Only Kansas, UCLA and Virginia have done it the previous four years. UCLA's streak will end this year, while Kansas can still extend it with three more wins. Virginia has already reached 12 league wins.
