City of Grand Island Snow Emergency Extended Until Midnight Tonight

City Of Grand Island

Due to the impacts of the continuing winter storm, Grand Island City Hall, Edith Abbott Public Library and the Community Field House will be closed today, Tuesday January 9, 2024.  The City’s Snow Alert/Emergency declaration has been extended to midnight tonight to facilitate the continued snow removal on the City’s arterials and Snow Emergency Routes.

Although City Street crews completed their first round of plowing the Snow Emergency Routes yesterday afternoon, the continued snow and drifting caused by high winds has required repeated plowing of those routes.  Street Superintendent Shannon Callahan anticipates being able to begin plowing of residential streets by mid-day today as the snow and wind subside, but it is likely drifting will continue to block previously plowed streets. Motorists are strongly encouraged to limit traveling until the inclement weather subsides and the streets are cleared.

Residents are reminded that parked or abandoned vehicles on Snow Emergency Routes are subject to being towed away and Grand Island Police Department will continue to monitor and enforce the emergency parking ban throughout the City.  The City also reminds residents that snowplows may throw snow onto curb sidewalks and driveways.  The Street Department advises residents not to shovel curb sidewalks or driveways until the streets have been cleared of snow.

At this time, the regularly scheduled City Council meeting tonight at 7:00 p.m. has not been canceled.  The City will continue to monitor road conditions as the day progresses and will update this press release in the event of a cancelation.

UPDATED:  Due to ice packed roads, low visibility and high winds, the City of Grand Island landfill and transfer station is closed today, January 9th.

Snow Alert/Emergency and Snow Emergency Route Parking Ban is being extended and will remain in effect until:

12 am (Midnight) on Wednesday, January 10, 2024

If a Snow Alert/ Emergency is in effect, no vehicles may be parked on the City’s snow emergency routes. The routes can be identified by the red, white and blue snow emergency signs posted every few blocks on these streets. Also a list of snow emergency routes is available at the City of Grand Island website.

The Grand Island Police Department will begin checking the City’s snow emergency routes when the emergency takes effect and will continue checking for illegally parked vehicles until the emergency expires.  Parked and/or abandoned vehicles on emergency routes are subject to being towed away.

Motorists are strongly encouraged to limit traveling until the inclement weather subsides and the streets are cleared.

Residents are reminded that snowplows may throw snow onto curb sidewalks and driveways.  The Street Department formally advised residents not to shovel curb sidewalks or driveways until the streets have been cleared of snow.

The City of Grand Island appreciates your patience and cooperation while working to return public streets to a safe means of transportation.
