Bluejay Baseball Blisters Butler, Taking Series with 13-1 Win

Creighton Bluejays

Indianapolis, Ind. -- Deadlocked in a scoreless battle entering the top of the fifth, Creighton Baseball plated 13 runs over the next four frames to dominate Butler 13-1 on Saturday, May 3. The win gave Creighton the series win, moving the Bluejays to 30-13 on the season and 11-3 in BIG EAST action, while Butler fell to 14-32 overall and 3-11 in conference action.

Matt Scherrman opened the floodgates for the Bluejays with a solo home run to open the fifth inning. Creighton went on to score one more in the frame as Kyle Hess doubled, then a sacrifice bunt and a sac fly from Tate Gillen made it 2-0.

Butler responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single from Jack Moroknek, but Scherrman more doubled the Jays output with a three-run blast to left field in the sixth to give Creighton a 5-1 edge.

The Bluejays tacked on six more runs in the seventh on six hits and a error. Will MacLean highlighted the frame with a two-run single, while Scherrman added an RBI double.

Creighton added two additional runs in the eighth courtesy of the second Butler error and another RBI by Scherrman, this time on a ground out to push the contest to 13-1.

Scherrman closed the game 3-for-5 with three runs scored and six RBI. It is the first time as a Bluejay that Scherrman went deep twice in a game and the six RBI is also the best for Scherrman at Creighton.

Creighton starter Jack Pineau earned the win (3-0) with six innings of one-run ball, while Butler starter Marcus Goodpaster took the loss (3-4) as he got tagged for seven runs on nine hits over 6.2 frames.

The Bluejays and Bulldogs will conclude their three-game series on Sunday, May 4 beginning at 12:00 p.m. (CT).
