Black Hills Energy Celebrates National Energy Awareness Month with Free Trees Giveaway

Nebraska, October 1, 2025 -- Black Hills Energy is celebrating National Energy Awareness Month this October, by offering a limited number of free trees to customers through our Energy Saving Trees partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation. When planted the right way and in the right places, trees can even help homeowners save on annual energy costs.

The benefits of trees grow over time, just as trees do. Trees clean our air and water, improve our physical and mental health, and beautify our communities. In addition, a well-placed tree can block hot summer sun and provide shelter from cold winter winds, reducing energy costs by as much as 20 percent for a homeowner.

Through an online educational and mapping tool developed by the Arbor Day Foundation, residents can reserve a free tree at blackhillsenergy.com/trees. The interactive tool helps guide residents to identify the best place to plant them in order to maximize air, water, and energy saving benefits. Trees will be delivered directly to residents at an ideal time for planting in their area.

When it’s time to plant, Black Hills Energy also urges customers to follow the safe digging practices found at blackhillsenergy.com/safety - which includes calling two business days before you dig and using white spray paint to mark the area where you plan to dig before line locaters arrive.

Registration opens October 1. Supplies are limited and reserved on a first-come, first-serve basis. Details can be found at blackhillsenergy.com/trees

Don’t forget to call or click 811 before you dig on any project – big or small.
