Balanced Effort LIfts Creighton WBB to 67-58 Win at Butler

Indianapolis, Ind. -- Six Bluejays delivered at least eight points as Creighton Women's Basketball defeated Butler 67-58 on Wednesday, February 18. The win pushed Creighton to 13-14 on the season and 9-9 in BIG EAST action, while Butler fell to 3-12 in conference contests and 9-18 overall.

Early treys from Norah Gessert and Grace Boffeli spurred Creighton to an early 10-3 edge (6:09) edge, but Butler pulled even at 12-12 (3:13). Norah Gessert delivered another trifecta and Elizabeth Gentry dropped in a bucket on the interior as Creighton held a 19-14 edge moving to the second quarter.

The Bluejays raced off on a 15-1 run to start the second stanza, getting treys from Ava Zediker, Norah Gessrt and Allison Heathcock along with layups from Boffeli and Kennedy Townsend. Heathcock wrapped the run with two from the charity strip to give Creighton a 34-15 lead (5:55). 

Creighton pushed its advantage to as much as 39-18 with 2:48 left in the first half, but Butler responded with a 10-0 run to make it 39-28 with under a minute remaining. The Bluejays got buckets from Zediker and a trey from Heathcock to take a 44-28 edge into the locker room.

Using four different starters in the second half, Butler turned up the defense in the third quarter. In the frame the Bulldogs outscored Creighton 15-7 to send the game to the fourth with the Bluejays leading 51-43.

Townsend opened the final frame with a pivotal three-ball, then Creighton got two free throws from Heathcock to push back out to a 13-point lead at 56-43. The Bluejays held their double-digit advantage into the final minute to secure the win.

Boffeli led Creighton with 15 points and nine rebounds, while Zediker delivered 13 points and Heathcock finished with 11 points. Butler got a game-high 18 points from McKenna Johnson, while Anna Wypych finished with 12 points.

The Bluejays are back in action on Thursday, February 26 in the final home game of the season. Creighton battles Providence with a scheduled 8:00 pm tip on TNT and truTV.
