Apartment House Total Loss After Saturday Morning Fire

(Grand Island, NE) - At approximately 1:28 a.m. on March 8, 2025, fire crews were dispatched to a fully involved structure fire at 410 W. Koenig. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy fire on the front and sides of a three-story residential building, which was divided into four apartments.
Initial reports indicated uncertainty regarding the status of two upstairs residents. Engine 1 initiated a quick attack on the fire while Engine 2 established a water supply. An additional ambulance was requested, and one occupant from the main-floor apartment was transported to the hospital for smoke-related injuries.
Crews conducted an aggressive interior search of the upstairs apartment, confirming no occupants were present. As conditions worsened, command transitioned to a defensive strategy, deploying large hose lines and Ladder 4’s elevated tower to contain the fire and prevent damage to adjacent buildings and property. Once the blaze was knocked down, crews utilized hand-lines to extinguish remaining hot spots.
The fire displaced eight tenants from the four apartments. The American Red Cross was notified and provided assistance to the affected residents. One individual, who initially suffered smoke inhalation, was later airlifted to Omaha due to complications.
Crews remained on the scene for approximately four hours. The structure sustained significant damage, rendering it a total loss. Valued at $180,000, the building is expected to be demolished. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
